The Sunsphere in Knoxville TN – History & Views

Exploring Knoxville from Above: A Unique Perspective

Sunsphere Knoxville – Landmark tower with gold glass reflecting the Tennessee skyline.

In the heart of World’s Fair Park, the Sunsphere in Knoxville stands as one of Tennessee’s most unique landmarks. Built for the 1982 World’s Fair, its golden glass panels gleam in the sunlight, making it a striking presence in the city skyline.

For just $5 per person, visitors can access the Observation Deck on the 4th level, offering sweeping views of Knoxville—from historic sites to modern architecture, all framed by the rolling Tennessee hills.

A Quick History of the Sunsphere

Designed as the symbol of the World’s Fair, the Sunsphere was constructed to represent the sun itself, standing 26 stories tall with a 75-foot-wide golden sphere at its peak. While the 1982 fair introduced groundbreaking innovations, the Sunsphere remained one of its most memorable creations, ultimately transforming into a lasting city icon.

After periods of uncertainty and restoration, the Sunsphere reopened, inviting visitors to once again experience its breathtaking cityscape views.
