Putting the Thermajane Base Layers to the Test in St. Augustine
I came to Florida thinking I could finally retire my hoodies and stocking caps. But while we were staying in St. Augustine, visiting my kiddos, it was COLD.
This Thermajane base layer review covers exactly how this thermal set held up during one very unexpected Florida cold snap — from backyard dog time to a freezing movie theater.
For context: I’m originally from New Jersey and spent a lot of time in Pennsylvania. I know real cold. But ever since I moved to Florida in 2009, something in my wiring changed and I turned into a full-on cold-weather wimp. I shiver, I tense up, and yes… I have absolutely cried from being cold. It’s ridiculous, and I am the ridiculous one doing it.
Cold. Weather. Wimp.
So there we were in chilly St. Augustine, and I was absolutely done with being cold. I needed a better plan than “wear three hoodies and complain.”
That’s when I grabbed a set of Thermajane base layers — top and leggings — and decided they were getting a full test run.
I put them on, climbed back into bed for a minute, and almost stayed there. They are that soft and comfy.
Thermajane Base Layer Review – What I Actually Liked
Here’s what stood out to me after wearing the set all day in real-world conditions:
- Soft and cozy inside – The brushed interior kept me warm without feeling bulky under other clothes.
- Comfortable enough to move in – I could stretch, crouch, and even hang from trees without worrying about seams splitting.
- No static cling – I usually get zapped by moisture-wicking fabrics. This set didn’t cling or shock me all day.
- Good base for layers – I could throw on a hoodie if I wanted, but I wasn’t dependent on it.
Basically, they gave me my day back instead of leaving me huddled under a blanket.
Real-World Test: A Chilly Day in St. Augustine
We were staying at a friend’s house with a fully fenced backyard — huge for our pups. Normally, cold mornings mean I send Zach out with the dogs while I stay inside and complain about drafts.
This time? I layered up with the Thermajanes and headed outside with the crew. I was not loving the temps, but I finally felt dressed for the outdoors instead of just complaining about them.
There were beautiful plants and trees in the yard, so of course, I had to go explore.
I was secretly hoping I’d blend into the plants. The color kind of did. I did not.
Normally, this is where I’d be freezing, tearing up, and bailing back inside. Instead, I stayed outside for the full dog time and actually enjoyed it. That alone sold me.
Plum, Grape Ape, and the Kumquat Tree Flexibility Test
At some point, Zach decided my outfit made me look like a plum. Personally, I think Grape Ape is more accurate. Either way, the color is fabulous and I’m taking it as a compliment.
I decided to hang from a kumquat tree. Because why wouldn’t I test how flexible these leggings really are? They passed. I could move, stretch, and climb without worrying about them giving up on me.
And for someone who’s basically a walking static zap in cooler weather, here’s the big surprise: the fabric didn’t cling. My clothes, my hair, my dogs — something is usually getting shocked. The Thermajane top didn’t stick to me or crackle with static. Huge win.
Cat Supervisors Included
Between dog zoomies and plant exploring, I also got plenty of kitty time. Scabbers and Phil are very committed to “helping” in the garden and hanging out while I wander around.
The fact that I could be outside, warm, and not rushing back in to thaw out meant extra time with them, too.
The Real Test: Icebox Movie Theater
Later that day, we loaded the dogs back in, grabbed the kids, and headed to the movies. If there is one place that will test your wardrobe choices, it’s a movie theater during a cold snap.
Two hours and five minutes of runtime, plus previews, plus the Marvel stinger after the credits — it’s basically a timed cold endurance challenge.
I tossed on a sweatshirt to walk in, but once we were inside, I was fine without it. Normally, I’d be freezing by the first plot twist. This time, I was just… comfortable. Which felt like a small miracle.
Thermajane Base Layer Review: Final Thoughts
I stayed warm in situations where I’d normally be miserable — outside with the dogs, wandering around plants, hanging out with the cats, and sitting through a full-length movie in an overachieving air conditioner.
We’ve definitely camped in colder conditions (not on purpose, I swear), and now I’m a lot less intimidated by winter travel. If I’m warm, snow doesn’t sound nearly as scary. These Thermajane base layers opened up a few new routes on the map.
If you’re a fellow cold-weather wimp dealing with Florida cold snaps, bus life drafts, or overachieving movie theater AC, you can check out the set I wore here:

Thermajane Base Layer Review: Common Questions
Are Thermajane base layers good for Florida winters?
Yes! While Florida winters aren’t extreme, they can be surprisingly chilly (especially mornings and evenings). Thermajane base layers provide enough warmth for outdoor activities, dog walks, and even over-air-conditioned indoor spaces without being too bulky.
Do Thermajane thermals work under regular clothes?
Absolutely. The set is thin enough to wear under jeans, sweatshirts, or hoodies without looking bulky. The fabric is smooth, so it doesn’t bunch up or create weird lines under your outer layers.
Are Thermajane base layers good quality?
For the price point, yes. The brushed interior is soft, the fabric stretches well, and the seams held up during active movement (including hanging from trees). They’re not technical outdoor gear, but they’re great for everyday cold weather wear.
Do Thermajane leggings cause static cling?
In my experience, no. I’m usually a walking static generator in winter, but these didn’t cling to me or zap me throughout the day. That was a pleasant surprise.
What size Thermajane base layers should I get?
I found them true to size. If you’re between sizes and prefer a looser fit for layering, size up. If you want them snug as a true base layer, stick with your normal size.
