Mount Scott Oklahoma | Scenic Drive & Hike

Mount Scott in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, with rocky overlooks, distant Oklahoma landscape, and Louie standing on the rocks.

We went to Mount Scott for a completely different reason.

The original plan was to see if it might be somewhere we could trail ride, or maybe take the EUCs (electric unicycles). But since we have a habit of not knowing what we’ve gotten ourselves into until we’re already doing it, we decided to drive up first.

Good decision.

I Did Not Enjoy the Drive Up

There’s a road all the way to the summit of Mount Scott, which sounds convenient until you’re the passenger staring out the window at the drop beside you.

That was my side.

Zach was driving. I was looking at air.

There are guardrails, but somehow a guardrail isn’t nearly as comforting when you’re sitting there thinking about why they needed to put one there in the first place.

The drive itself isn’t very long. It just feels considerably longer when you’re spending most of it wishing your side of the vehicle were attached to the mountain.

We eventually made it to the top, where I could stop thinking about plummeting off Oklahoma.

Okay, the Top Was Worth It

Once we were out of the vehicle, Mount Scott was a completely different experience.

There are huge granite rocks everywhere, views in every direction, and plenty of places to wander around. We had the dogs with us, so naturally they ended up exploring right along with us while we took pictures.

And yes, after complaining my way up the mountain, I was perfectly happy once we were standing on top of it. 😂

Going Down Was MUCH Better

The trip back down was almost relaxing.

Why?

My side was against the mountain.

No staring over the edge. No wondering how effective that guardrail really was. Just a nice reassuring wall of rock outside my window.

Funny how quickly your opinion of a mountain road can improve when gravity is no longer the main feature of the view.

If You Go to Mount Scott

Mount Scott is inside the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge near Lawton, Oklahoma, and you can drive to the summit when the road is open. The road is steep and curvy, dogs are welcome on leash, and the rest of the refuge has bison, lakes, and trails if you’ve got time.

The refuge itself is worth leaving time for. This isn’t one of those places where you drive up, take a summit picture, and have seen everything there is to see.

And if heights make you nervous?

Maybe arrange your seating based on which direction you’re traveling. 😂
